Did you watch the Emmy's? Well, judged by the ratings, you likely didn't. Early indications from the overnights have the annual show bottoming out. If that holds true, it would continue the trend from years last in that each televised celebration appears to be getting worse.
Nevertheless, let's chat about the show this year. Stephen Colbert was a solid host. He wasn't the best ever, but as most of you know, we have endured far worse. Hell, he was entertaining and damn it to hell we needed it 1000%. We were treated to the usual dance and song for the opening number.
Heck, it was almost delightful. That is until the audience got a taste of a 'spice' they would have rather done without. I, of course, am talking about the appearance of Sean Spicer.
No. Just no. If that were a ballot measure at the producers round-table, it is one that should not have passed!
While the attempt to be different needs to be respected and acknowledged, it is a decision that left 100% of us wondering what the hell the producers were thinking. Are they deep into a fog brought on by the Keto diet? Did someone forget to refill their Zolft? I mean - c'mon. Quite frankly, I think I would have rather tasted a fart...for an hour.
But, I digress. The awards themselves had few surprises. What was described as the most diverse group of nominees would live up to that billing. What was even more astounding was that the distinct few that took home a statue were actually worthy of their win. Not, what some could call tokenism. Although, it should be noted that there were very few Latino winners this year.
My man Sterling K. Brown took home Best Actor for his role in This is Us. He would call his co-stars "the best white TV family" a man could ever hope for. He is undoubtedly deserving of the Emmy. Anyone who can bring that emotion to a role with such believably week after week for 18 episodes is 'da man!

What is more is that he does this with every role he takes on. Be it his guest role on "Insecure" or him embodying Christopher Dardin on "American Crime Story," the man delivers.

And in another bad producing decision, he was cut off before he could finish!
Have no fear, his backstage FULL speech can be seen here.
"Atlanta" was a big winner seeing Donald Glover take home an Emmy for directing - the first ever by an African American. And Netflix's "Master of None" would not only produce an Emmy winner for writing, it would also achieve one of the nights biggest and best acceptance speeches by Lena Waithe.
Riz Ahmed took home the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series. His win proved that Emmy voters do indeed reward performance and not momentum. The finale for "Night of" aired over a year ago.
HULU was a big winner, and not just in the streaming service realm either. "The Handmaiden's Tale" would add 8 statues to their shelves. The show would take home Outstanding Drama Series, Outstanding Writing, Outstanding Supporting Actress for Ann Dowd, and Lead Actress for Elisabeth Moss.
SNL was another 'yugge' winner taking home 9. It would also lay claim to the other popular acceptance speech given by Alec Baldwin. The veteran actor won the Emmy and his first order of business was to acknowledge the Commander in Chief.
"Here, Mr. President, is your Emmy," he would quip.
Other winners were HBO for Big Little Lies. The HBO show would claim Outstanding Actress, Outstanding Supporting Actress, and Outstanding Actor and Outstanding Limited Series.
Julia Louis Dreyfus would make history becoming the actor with the most consecutive wins for a single role.

So, in all, mocking the President (real or fictional), diversity, and originality we all big winners at the 2017 Emmy's. Now, if only we can all agree that a "9-5" reunion needs to happen yesterday, Jane Fonda makes aging look good, and all award shows be as well paced, then we can get a great Monday going.
